This webpage is dedicated to Paul Edward Mincey who was an uncle by
marriage to the author's wife. Paul was a most delightful old
gentleman who in his youth knew the author's grandparents and great
grandparents. Once when the author was visiting Aunt Ollie and Uncle
Paul, Paul said to the author: "You sure do remind me of your
grandfather." He was referring to Frederick Eugene Ballard (1871-1926)
who was the author's grandfather and who on 15-SEP-1893 had claimed a
farm near Perry, Oklahoma in the famous Cherokee Strip Land Run.
Additionally, Paul Edward Mincey as a young man had known Joseph A.
Wollam. Mr. and Mrs. Wollam were such good friends with the author's
great grandparents, James Thomas Musgrove and Eva McDonald Musgrove,
that the Wollams invited the Musgroves to be buried with them in the
one mausoleum in the Walters Cemetery.

CHAPTER: 001: Paul Edward Mincey, Remembered
**********************************************************************
The following is from the handout given to those attending the
memorial service for Paul Edward Mincey. The author hopes that the
immediate family will approve the inclusion of this material.

Paul Edward Mincey, was born at Farmersville, TX on December 4, 1906
to William Robert and Ora Uretta Legg Mincey. He passed away on April
22, 1998 in a Weatherford care center at the age of 91 years, 4 months
and 18 days.
Paul's parents, four brothers and four sisters moved to Walters, OK
from Farmersville, TX in a covered wagon in 1907. While living in
Walters, Paul and his family farmed for J. A. Wollam Farms for 32
years. They moved to Temple, OK in 1939.
Paul married Ollie Flora Stapp of Walters, April 13, 1933 at Lawton,
OK and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Paul worked
at Ft. Sill as a mechanic from 1941 until 1974.
Paul and Ollie had three children: Pauline (Mincey) Bone, Frieda Lou
(Mincey) Mahlstedt and William Robert Mincey. Paul attended the
Baptist Church as a child and later attended Westminister Presbyterian
in Lawton.
Paul is preceded in death by a daughter: Pauline Bone, a

granddaughter, Debra Sue Everman, 3 brothers, Shirley Mincey, Vestal
Mincey and Alvin Ray Mincey and a sister, Glenn Clifton.
He is survived by his wife, Ollie of Weatherford, OK, a son, William
Robert Mincey of Tampa Bay, FL, a daughter, Frieda Lou Mahlstedt of
Weatherford, OK, 3 sisters, Margie Keeney and Robbie Eversole both of
Temple, OK, Estal Clark of Clarendon, TX, a brother, Woodrow Mincey of
Walters, OK, 6 grandchildren, Floyd Bone, Jr of Houston, TX, Cheryl
Barrett of Lawton, OK, Jerry Mahlstedt of Crani, MO, Sharon Mahan of
Weatherford, OK, Robert P. Mincey of Ft. Smith, AR, Erin Mincey of
Oldsmar, FL, and 9 great grandchildren and many other relatives and
friends.

All of the early marriage records for Henderson Co, Tennessee were
lost in court house fires in 1863 and 1895. This has greatly hampered
research into the Mincey families of Henderson Co, Tennessee.
Various standard genealogical reference books were used to provide
information. A few of the sources used are listed in the Bibliography.
Several Censuses were consulted also.

CHAPTER: 003: The Name Mincey
**********************************************************************
Several sources regarding surnames or last names were consulted
regarding the name Mincey. All but one gave the origin as

English/Irish. That one gave the origin as only English but did give
Minshew as being virtually the same name.
In looking at the early records in the books about North Carolina the
author noticed a few references to a name Minshew. In one case a John
Mincey who received a 640 acre land patent in 1723 is referred to in
another land record as John Minshew.
It is extremely likely, all things considered, that the name was
originally pronounced Minshew but was spelled Mincey.
Apparently the immigrant or immigrants who first bore the name Mincey
came to North Carolina prior to 1723 when John Mincey received a land
patent there of 640 acres. Most early immigrants to North Carolina
were Scottish or were Irish from Northern Ireland. The troubles we
hear about today in Northern Ireland existed in those days too.
It is not uncommon for names which now seem very simply pronounced in
English to have been pronounced rather differently in the past, even
though the names were from Scotland or Ireland.
The modern pronunciation came about very early in America, presuming
the above is true, since the many variant spellings give a phonetic
pronunciation which is the same as the way we pronounce the name
Mincey today.
Here are some of the many spellings: Mincy, Mincie, Minsey, Minsy and
Minzy.
Apparently a few of the Mincey's in the early days in America started
actually spelling their name Menshew, and this has come down to the
present day. The name Menshew has really only one variant spelling:
Menchew.
The pronunciation of Mincey is like the two English words "men" and
"see" run together with the accent on the first syllable. The
pronunciation of Menshew, which was the probable original
pronunciation from Ireland, is like the two English words "men" and
"shoe" run together, again with the accent on the first syllable.
Mincey is an extremely rare name and today about half of the persons
with this name live in Georgia. This is based upon the Social Security
death list covering fifty-six million Americans who died prior to
1997.
According to the U.S. Census internet site based upon the 1990 Census
the name Mincey is the 5186th most common name occurring in 0.002
percent of the population.

in the Natchez Trace State Park on the ridge north of Scarce Creek off
the road to Wildersville from the store in the park.

CHAPTER: 005: Early Persons with the Mincey Name in America

This chapter collects some information available about persons with
the Mincey name who are earlier than the earliest ones known to be
ancestors of Paul Edward Mincey. All of the examples are from
North Carolina. It is almost certain that the Mincey ancestors of Paul
Edward Mincey are among these persons.

John Mincey of Chowan Co, NC on 06-FEB-1741/1742 sold land that was
part of a 640 acre patent granted to John Mincey on 01-APR-1723 in
Northampton Co, NC. There are two more references to this land in the
records of Northampton Co, NC. In the last of these references John
Mincey is referred to as John Minshew.

Oma Goldie Stapp Crouch, the sister of Paul Edward
Mincey's wife Ollie Flora Stapp Mincey, on 10-MAY-1998 at age
93 very well remembered Andy Mincey, the grandfather of Paul. She
said that Paul's grandfather Mincey was very much like Paul.
Angeline is listed with her parents on the 1860 Census for
Henderson Co, Tennessee. Her mother is buried at the Foster
Cemetery in north east Henderson Co, Tennessee. Sometimes the last
name Birch is spelled Burch.
Andrew Jackson Mincey received $337.81 from the estate of his
father John Mincey on 18-FEB-1907. Andrew Jackson Mincey was
living in Collin Co, Texas at the time. Later he received an
additional $387.81.
