CHAPTER: 012: The Battle of King's Mountain
**********************************************************************
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Battle of King's Mountain was one of the most extraordinary events
of the Revolutionary War. Here is a brief explanation of the event
which is here retold from many sources. The British had had much
trouble in New England during the Revolutionary War and could make no
progress there. They then turned most of their attention to the
southern colonies. In the south the British at first did extremely
well by winning a number of important battles and stamping out much of
the resistance. The man in charge of the southern British forces in
the field was Colonel Patrick Ferguson. He was a crack shot with a
rifle and an excellent leader of men. He had demonstated his
markmanship before the British king.
After several important victories against forces poorly organized by
the Continental Congress, Colonel Ferguson turned his attention to the
large number of settlers called the "Over Mountain Men". These
settlers had settled over the mountains of western North Carolina and
western Virginia. Some lived in what today is eastern Tennessee. They
were the frontiersmen of that time.
Colonel Ferguson wrote them a general letter, in no uncertain terms,
telling them to declare their allegiance to his British forces or he
would come over the mountains with his troops, kill them and wipe out
their families. These "Over Mountain Men" were exactly the wrong
people to threaten in this fashion. These settlers had cleared fields,
faced wild animals, survived hunger and disease, and were constantly
at war with the Indians. The "Over Mountain Men" had standing militias
ready to fight off an Indian attack at a moment's notice. While they
Page .9. 12-MAR-2004
knew very little of formal military procedures, they readily knew how
to defend their families.
The "Over Mountain Men" decided to take matters entirely into their
own hands, completely without authorization of the Continental
Congress. They gathered together about 1200 of their militia men while
leaving just enough behind to defend their families against a quick
Indian attack. Six hundred of the men on horse back rode thirty-six
hours in a cold blinding rain towards where they believed Colonel
Ferguson and his soldiers were entrenched. The "Over Mountain Men"
wrapped their rifles and powder in blankets and even in their own
shirts to keep them dry for the battle. They had nothing to eat for
the ride but a little parched corn.
The date was 07-OCT-1780. The place was King's Mountain, which was a
long ridge running southwest and northeast just south of the South
Carolina and North Carolina line. Colonel Ferguson and his men were
barricaded on the top. The "Over Mountain Men" attacked on all sides.
The British made a number of bayonet charges down the mountain. During
these charges the "Over Mountain Men" retreated while keeping up a
murderous rifle fire. In an hour's time it was over. Colonel Ferguson
was killed with a large number of his troops. Many were taken
prisoner. This battle marked the turn of the Revolutionary War in the
south against the British.
Afterwards the "Over Mountain Men" had to hurry back west to their
homes. A group of over one thousand Indians was preparing to attack
due to the lessened number of men defending the frontier.
The Continental Congress refused to recognize the tremendous victory
which the "Over Mountain Men" had achieved. In later years, at first,
these men were not even allowed pensions with other Revolutionary
soldiers. Only after several states began giving pensions to these
heroic men did the United States government finally relent and add the
survivors and widows to the pension lists.
It is a great distinction for a person to have an ancestor who fought
at the Battle of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War. John
Hames and Charles Brandon were both there. The Baines family
of Hennessey is decended twice from each of these men. The author of
this descent chart is descended once from each of these men and once
from John S. Fagan who was wounded when he reached the summit of
King's Mountain and jumped the British barracade.
